Amazing Tree Carving on Dob Lane Park
15th of July, 2026
On Tuesday 7th July 2026 we had one of the recently felled trees on the park carved into a sculpture of a “Green man”.
The 2 poplar trees were planted on the park in 1966. They grew to a considerable size and unfortunately started to break down, leaving large branches hanging dangerously low to the ground.
South Ribble Borough Council decided to fell both trees to prevent any possibility of accident or incident.
On hearing this decision, Little Hoole Parish Council asked SRBC if they would leave a stump large enough for sculpture being carved, providing us with an opportunity to appreciate a unique artistic feature on the park for young and old to enjoy
A professional tree carver, Andy Burgess, was picked to do the job. He has worked all over the North West for the last 18 years.
He has made sculptures for private people, schools, communities, councils, corporations and the National Trust.
He has been featured with Alan Titchmarsh on the television show “Love your weekend” and was the first chainsaw carver to exhibit on the Chelsea flower show.
We are very proud to have one of his pieces on our park!
We chose the “Green man” because it tickles the imagination, a fairytale figure watching from the edges of wild hedges, looking at us and looking out for us.
We are sure the sculpture will age well, he is gnarly and a bit rough and this will become even more distinct over the years.
The council will treat him with oil every year and we think he will last for at least 20 years.
We hope you like it as much as we do.
Little Hoole Parish Council.
