Little Hoole Parish Council Uses Grant to Fund Insect Hotel Workshop for Local Pupils

26th of June, 2024

Little Hoole Parish Council recently turned their Lancashire County Council biodiversity grant into a buzzing success by hosting a fun and educational workshop for the pupils of Little Hoole Primary School’s after-school club. The event focused on raising awareness about the importance of insects in our gardens and how we can encourage them to thrive in urban environments.

The highlight of the workshop was the creation of unique insect hotels, a project that captivated the children's imagination and creativity. Using materials like bamboo sticks, pine cones, fir cones, moss, hay, and wooden blocks with holes, each child built their own insect hotel. To add a personal touch, the children decorated their hotels and attached a wooden heart to make them truly one-of-a-kind.

Organised and delivered by Parish Councillors Sara Evald, Laurence Dryden, and Shirley Rainsbury, the event was a hands-on experience that left the children with a deeper understanding of biodiversity and a sense of accomplishment. Every participant received a certificate of appreciation from the council, along with a booklet to share their new knowledge with their parents.

The day was filled with laughter and learning, as the children enjoyed using their hands and creativity to contribute to their local environment. The workshop not only fostered environmental stewardship but also provided a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Following the workshop the parish council donated another 18 insect hotels to the Little Hoole Parent Teachers Association, which they will be selling at their summer fair on Saturday 29th June; all proceeds from their sale will go towards the PTAs fundraising for new markings on the school's playgrounds.
